Architectural & Cultural Essay
A memorial complex honoring National Hero Truong Dinh (1820–1864), located within the Tet Mau Than – Gieng Nuoc Lon Park belt and Truong Dinh Street in central My Tho. The landmark pays tribute to the patriotic commander who defied the Hue royal court's 1862 disarmament order to accept the people's banner as 'Grand Marshal Pacifying the West' (Binh Tay Dai Nguyen Soai) during the anti-colonial resistance.
National hero Truong Dinh (1820–1864, born in Binh Son District, Quang Ngai Province) moved south to Dinh Tuong – Go Cong in 1844, where he organized landless farmers to establish the prosperous Gia Thuan agricultural settlement. When French colonial forces seized Gia Dinh Citadel (1859) and advanced into Dinh Tuong – My Tho (1861), he raised a volunteer militia that scored major victories. Following the Treaty of Saigon in 1862, the Hue royal court ordered him to lay down arms and transfer to An Giang; moved by the urgent pleas of Southern villagers and patriotic scholars such as Nguyen Dinh Chieu and Nguyen Huu Huan, he chose to remain with the people, who proclaimed him 'Binh Tay Dai Nguyen Soai' (Grand Marshal Pacifying the West). Ambushed through betrayal on the night of August 19–20, 1864, and severely wounded, he took his own life with his sword rather than be captured. In central My Tho, the memorial space and the thoroughfare bearing Truong Dinh's name connect directly with the Tet Mau Than – Gieng Nuoc Lon Park complex (an almost 50,000-square-meter green lung bounded by Ap Bac, Tet Mau Than, Ly Thuong Kiet, and Yersin streets, originally formed from the 1826 Dinh Tuong Citadel moat). Monuments and historical steles across Tien Giang immortalize his resolute declaration to defend the homeland alongside the people of the Six Southern Provinces. Walking beneath the century-old canopy beside the Gieng Nuoc Lon reservoir in the early morning or evening breeze, local residents, students from neighboring Nguyen Dinh Chieu High School, and cultural travelers gather to pay homage and reflect on the indomitable 19th-century patriotic heritage of Dinh Tuong – Tien Giang.
